Breakfast soup

The odd-pod form of lotus roots threw me off when I first saw my mom pick them out at the market.

Peeled and sliced, they resemble fun pinwheels, flowers, and polka dots. To me, the texture and visual appeal of lotus roots are what I enjoy most.

The lotus root and carrot were a nice sweetening addition to my winter melon soup this chilly morning. The rich bites of chestnut were also filling.
